Capacity of ensilage of Jatropha curcas L. cake to degrade forbol esters R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,André Soares de; Schwambach,Thiago Ivan; Sinhorin,Adilson Paulo; Oliveira,Márcia Rodrigues Carvalho; Alessi,Karine Claudia; Oliveira Filho,Francisco Antônio de; Pina,Douglas dos Santos.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of the ensilage of Jatropha curcas L. expeller cake to reduce the phorbol esters and its effect on fermentative losses, by adding soluble carbohydrates or microbial inoculants. The design was completely randomized with four replications in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement, with three sources of soluble carbohydrates (SC, control, 50 g sucrose/kg or 50 g crude glycerin/kg as fed) and two doses of microbial inoculants (MI, 0 or 5 × 10(5) ufc Lactobacillus plantarum + 3.33 × 10(5) ufc Propionibacterium per g as fed). Twenty-four mini-silos (982 cm³) of polyvinyl chloride were created and opened after 60 days of fermentation at room temperature. The pre-hydrated Jatropha curcas L. cake (282 g of water/kg)...

Corn germ meal as substitute for corn in the diet of confined Santa Inês sheep: chemical and lipid meat composition Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Urbano,Stela Antas; Ferreira,Marcelo de Andrade; Madruga,Marta Suely; Azevedo,Paulo Sérgio de; Bispo,Safira Valença; Silva,Emmanulle Cordeiro da.
The per capita consumption of sheep meat in Brazil is still small compared to meat originating from other animal species, the lipid profile of meat named as responsible for reduced consumption. Despite the influence of sex, breed, weight at slaughter and environment, diet is seen as a major factor influencing the lipid composition of sheep meat. This study evaluated the effect of replacing corn by corn germ meal (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) in the diet of Santa Inês sheep on the meat's chemical and lipid composition. Forty non-emasculated animals were distributed in a randomized block experimental design, with five treatments and eight replications, and slaughtered after 70 days of confinement. There was no influence of the substitution on the meat's chemical...

DEMAND ESTIMATION FOR AGRICULTURAL PROCESSING CO-PRODUCTS AgEcon
Wachenheim, Cheryl J.; Novak, Patrick J.; DeVuyst, Eric A.; Lambert, David K..
Co-products of processing agricultural commodities are often marketed through private transaction rather than through public markets or those in which public transaction information is recorded or available. The resulting lack of historical price information prohibits the use of positive time series techniques to estimate demand. Demand estimates for co-products are of value to both livestock producers, who obtain them for use in livestock rations, and processors, who must sell or otherwise dispose of them. Linear programming has long been used, first by researchers and later as a mainstream tool for nutritionists and producers, to formulate least-cost livestock rations. Here it is used as a normative technique to estimate step function demand...

Dietary glycerin does not affect meat quality of Ile de France lambs R. Bras. Zootec.
Borghi,Thiago Henrique; Silva Sobrinho,Américo Garcia da; Zeola,Nivea Maria Brancacci Lopes; Almeida,Fabiana Alves de; Cirne,Luís Gabriel Alves; Lima,Ana Rebeca Castro.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical and nutritional characteristics of meat from three muscles of Ile de France lambs fed diets containing different levels of glycerin as an alternative to corn. Thirty non-castrated feedlot Ile de France lambs weighing 15±0.2 kg were housed in individual pens and slaughtered at 32±0.2 kg. Treatments consisted of three diets: sugarcane + 0% glycerin; sugarcane + 10% glycerin; and sugarcane + 20% glycerin; and three muscles were evaluated: triceps brachii, semimembranosus, and longissimus lumborum. No interactions were observed among glycerin levels and muscle types for the quality characteristics evaluated. Muscles were similar in terms of physicochemical and nutritional characteristics,...

How does the dietary cottonseed hull affect the carcass characteristics and meat quality of young bulls finished in a high-concentrate diet? Animal Sciences
Eiras, Carlos Emanuel; Ornaghi, Mariana Garcia; Valero, Maribel Velandia; Rivaroli, Dayane Cristina; Guerrero, Ana; Prado, Ivanor Nunes do.
This study evaluated the effects of diets composed by cottonseed hull and meat aging on carcass characteristics and meat quality from young bulls fed on a high-concentrate system. Thirty crossbred bulls were assigned in a complete randomized experimental factorial design with three diets (CH21: cottonseed hull 210 g kg-1on a DM basis, CH27: cottonseed hull 270 g kg-1on a DM basis and CH33: cottonseed hull 330 g kg-1on a DM basis) and different aging times (24 hours and 3, 7 and 14 days). Meat from CH27 diets presented smaller LM moisture content (p < 0.05). Total lipids were smaller in CH33 diet (p <0.05). At 24 hours, CH21 diet presented smaller LM cooking loss than other diets. The increasing aging time reduced the shear force (p < 0.001) on the...
